David is best known for his advocacy skills and in 2008 was appointed Senior Counsel (now Queen’s Counsel) being one of the first solicitors in Auckland to achieve that honour.
David Heaney was admitted to the New Zealand Bar in 1976.
David practiced as a barrister sole for three years. In 1980 he commenced practice on his own account as a barrister and solicitor under the name Heaney & Co acting predominantly for insurance companies.
Over the next three decades David developed his expertise and skill in insurance related litigation and more recently with a particular emphasis on litigation involving the liabilities of local and regional authorities.
Over a period of many years David has represented his insurance and local/regional government clients on numerous occasions before all courts in New Zealand including the Privy Council and Supreme Court. He has a solid commitment to representing his clients and a keen interest in the legal principles the claims involving them concern.
He retired as the senior partner at Heaney & Partners in 2015 and practices now as a barrister sole.
